1908-born in Chanteloup, France.
1931-began his career in photography. Before that, had been studying painting and literature.
1932-bought first Leica.
1935-studied film technology with Paul Strand, was camera assistant to Jean Renoir.
1936-volunteered in the Spanish Civil War, made a documentary in Spain.
1940-was returned to Germany as a prisoner of war
1947-founded the Magnum photo agency with Robert Capa, D. Szynim.
1973-gave up photography to concentrate on drawing and painting.
